A St. Sophia Cathedral Wedding: Christina and Ryan's Black-Tie Los Angeles Day
A real St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral wedding: a veil spread beneath the gold Byzantine altar, huskies in tuxedo bandanas, chanting clergy by candlelight, and a City Club reception above downtown.
St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral is one of the most breathtaking rooms in Los Angeles: a Byzantine sanctuary washed in gold, crimson, and candlelight that photographs like a Renaissance painting. Christina and Ryan married there on the first of February, a palindrome date their invitations got to wear, and then took the celebration fifty-one floors up to City Club LA.
We know both rooms well. St. Sophia appears in Laura and Garen's wedding, and we photographed another City Club celebration just two weeks before this one. Knowing a venue's light before the day starts is half the job.
Gucci Bows and a Palindrome Date
The details ran black-tie from the first frame: blush heels and a crystal garter arranged on velvet, a Gucci bowtie laid out for Ryan, and Christina dressing at Hotel Figueroa downtown before her portrait with an all-white bouquet, veil drawn over her shoulders.
Ryan's prep took to the roof, a portrait against the towers in his shawl-collar tuxedo, and a champagne toast shot from below with the whole groom's party circled against the sky.
Two Huskies in Black Tie
Before the ceremony, the wedding party's best-dressed members reported for duty: the couple's two huskies, each in a tuxedo bandana, posing beside the gown like they had done it before. Pets at weddings take planning, a handler, and about four minutes of canine patience, and they are worth every bit of it.
Ten years from now, these are the frames that will stop the album flip.
Candlelight and Chant
The Orthodox ceremony filled St. Sophia with everything the tradition carries: clergy chanting by candlelight, the crowning, and a sanctuary that seems to glow from within. From the balcony, the cathedral wide shows Christina's train pouring down the crimson aisle beneath the chandeliers, the frame that became the hero of this story from the altar steps.
Sacred ceremonies ask for long lenses, quiet feet, and respect for the liturgy. The reward is a set of photographs no ballroom can imitate.
Golden Hour in the Courtyard, Skyline After Dark
Between the cathedral and the club we stole twenty minutes in the courtyard, a laughing stroll past the fountain and a veil-wrapped kiss in the last of the light. Then City Club: white florals, a sweetheart table backed by the glittering basin, and a first dance in a single spotlight.
The night ended the way the day began, with the two of them laughing, this time over a five-tier cake with the whole room on their side.
