Dressing for Art
What you wear shapes how timeless your portraits feel. A few guiding principles, and don't worry, we help plan every look with you.
Four Principles That Always Work
Coordinate, Don't Match
Choose a palette of two or three complementary tones rather than identical outfits. Matching reads as a uniform; coordinating reads as intentional, layered, and alive.
Timeless Over Trendy
Solid, classic colors and clean silhouettes age beautifully. Skip large logos, bright neons, and of-the-moment patterns that will date the photograph in a year.
Texture & Layers
Knits, linen, lace, leather, suede, and thoughtful layers add the depth and dimension that flat fabrics can't. Texture is what makes an image feel rich on the wall.
Dress for the Wall
Ask one question of every outfit: would I want to see this hanging in my home in ten years? If the answer is yes, it belongs in the session.
Three Palettes We Love
Pick a direction, then pull two or three tones from it. Any of these reads as gallery-worthy.

Soft Neutrals
Cream, oatmeal, taupe, and warm white. Endlessly timeless, especially for family and maternity, they keep the focus on faces and feeling.

Rich Jewel Tones
Emerald, burgundy, sapphire, plum. Saturated and editorial, they read as luxurious against both dark and light backdrops.

Moody Darks
Charcoal, black, deep navy. Dramatic and slimming, they let skin and expression carry the frame, our signature low-key look.

Wardrobe Questions
What if I still can't decide what to wear?
Send us photos of your options before the session, we review wardrobe with every client and will help you choose the looks that photograph best. You're never on your own with this.
Do you really provide gowns?
Yes. Our studio keeps a curated wardrobe of designer gowns, especially for maternity and fine-art portrait sessions, in a range of sizes. We'll talk through what's available when you book.
Should we get hair and makeup done?
We highly recommend professional hair and makeup for your portrait session, it photographs noticeably better and helps you feel your most confident. We're glad to recommend artists we trust in both Los Angeles and Dallas-Fort Worth.
What colors should we avoid?
Large logos, bright neons, and busy small patterns (tight stripes and checks can create a shimmer on camera). Otherwise, stay within a coordinated palette and you'll be in great shape.
