A Los Angeles Sikh Wedding: Harmen and Amaritpal's Multi-Day Celebration
A real multi-day Sikh wedding across Los Angeles: a sangeet in royal blue, an Anand Karaj at Gurdwara Sahib in Walnut, editorial portraits in a red lehenga and ivory sherwani, and a rose garden at golden hour.
A Sikh wedding is never one day. Harmen and Amaritpal's celebration unfolded across several, a sangeet glowing in royal blue and mehndi, a morning Anand Karaj beneath the canopy at Gurdwara Sahib in Walnut, and portraits that moved from editorial window light to a rose garden in full July bloom.
Photographing a Punjabi wedding well means knowing the rhythm of its ceremonies, when to be invisible inside the gurdwara, when the baraat wants energy, and when the light is simply too good to waste. This one gave us all three.
A Sangeet in Royal Blue
The celebration opened with the sangeet: Harmen in a royal blue suit scattered with silver, fresh mehndi on her hands, and a stage draped in pink and marigold tones behind the couple. These pre-wedding nights are where the guard drops, the music runs late, and the candid frames stack up.
We photograph the sangeet as its own complete event, because it is one.
Editorial Mornings
The wedding morning gave us the portrait session we plan whole timelines around: Harmen in her embroidered lehenga lit by window blinds, bangles stacked to the elbow, and Amaritpal in his ivory sherwani and turban, a portrait with the gravity of an old master painting.
The red dupatta got its own moment too, cascading down a staircase beneath a golden arch, the kind of frame that turns a hallway into architecture.
The Anand Karaj at Gurdwara Sahib
The Anand Karaj filled the gurdwara in Walnut with prayer and color: the couple seated before the Guru Granth Sahib beneath a red-draped canopy, the laavan rounds, and families in silks of green, gold, and rose gathered close on the floor.
Sacred ceremonies like this ask the photographer for reverence first, long lenses, quiet movement, heads covered, and the patience to let the ritual lead. The images that come back are among the most meaningful we make.
Red and Ivory in a Rose Garden
After the ceremony we stole the couple into a rose garden at full bloom, and the hero image of this story happened almost immediately: Harmen's intricately embroidered red lehenga and Amaritpal's ivory sherwani against a wall of roses, the palette this wedding was built on.
As the sun dropped we finished in black and white, a dip kiss among the roses and a dusk portrait under a wide darkening sky. Color tells the story of a Punjabi wedding; monochrome tells the weight of it.
