A Hummingbird Nest Ranch Wedding: Roxy and Javier's Hacienda Celebration

A real wedding at Hummingbird Nest Ranch in the Santa Susana hills: a Spanish hacienda courtyard, both parents down the aisle, two chihuahuas in formal wear, and a sunset through wrought-iron gates.

Hummingbird Nest Ranch sits in the Santa Susana hills above Simi Valley, a Spanish hacienda estate with tiled courtyards, bougainvillea climbing every wall, and wrought-iron gates that frame the valley below. Roxy and Javier found us on The Knot, booked thirteen months ahead, and gave us a June wedding day that used every inch of the property.

The image at the top of this story is the one we still show couples who ask what golden hour looks like here: Roxy and Javier mid high-five, silhouetted against the sunset through the estate gates. It sums the whole day up. This was a wedding that never stopped being fun, and the ranch never stopped giving us backdrops.

They also chose a Friday, which is worth mentioning for anyone planning here. Friday dates at in-demand estates like Hummingbird Nest Ranch tend to open up sooner, often price better, and photograph identically to a Saturday. The sunset does not check the calendar.

Details With Personality

Roxy's styling started with a pair of electric-blue Jimmy Choos, her something blue, and ended with a crystal-strapped mermaid gown that photographed beautifully against the ranch's climbing bougainvillea. Her bouquet was a cascade of white phalaenopsis orchids that matched the arrangements lining the ceremony aisle.

And then there were the dogs. Roxy and Javier's two chihuahuas joined the wedding party in formal wear, riding laps in the bridal suite and walking the ceremony with the party. As a studio that photographs dogs year round, we consider ourselves fully qualified for this assignment, and we take it exactly as seriously as it deserves.

Walked Down the Aisle by Both Parents

Roxy came down the tiled courtyard aisle escorted by both of her parents, through late-afternoon sun and past white orchid arrangements on every row. It is a tradition we photograph often and love deeply: the walk becomes a family moment instead of a handoff, and the images carry three generations of emotion in a single frame.

June light in the Santa Susana hills is strong, so we time courtyard ceremonies here around how the sun moves across the tile. It is the kind of venue knowledge that only comes from shooting a property repeatedly, and it is exactly what we cover in our first-hand Hummingbird Nest Ranch venue guide.

Portraits Across the Ranch

After the ceremony we worked the property in a loop: the stone bell tower standing alone against the hills, the arched breezeways with their iron lanterns, and the gates where the valley opens up behind the couple. Javier's groomsmen wore light grey against the bridesmaids' blush, a palette that holds up beautifully in the ranch's warm light.

The estate reads like a Spanish village, which means a portrait session here never repeats itself. Give your photographer forty five minutes at Hummingbird Nest Ranch and you will get gallery variety that most venues need three locations to produce.

A styling note that served this wedding well: against terracotta, whitewash, and hot June sun, soft colors win. The blush and grey palette kept every group photo cohesive, and Roxy's white orchids read clean against all that warm architecture. When couples ask us how their colors will photograph at a specific venue, this is the conversation we have, and it is worth having before the invitations are printed.

A Courtyard Reception Under the Stars

The reception took over the main courtyard: a white dance floor monogrammed with their initials, tables wrapped around the fountain, string lights overhead, and the hacienda glowing behind it all. Outdoor receptions at the ranch run on ambient light and personality, and this one had plenty of both.

As the sun dropped we stole ten minutes for the gate silhouettes, then handed the night back to the dance floor. That rhythm, planned portraits woven into an unscripted party, is how we approach every wedding we photograph.
