A Calamigos Ranch Birchwood Room Wedding: Monica and Colin in the Malibu Oaks

Tucked into Latigo Canyon in the Malibu hills, Calamigos Ranch is one of Southern California's most beloved wedding properties, oaks and sycamores, a private lake, and after dark, the twinkle lights that made it famous. Monica and Colin took over the Birchwood Room on a July Saturday and used every bit of the ranch, from a veil-sweeping portrait on the lawn to a final kiss under the hanging lights.

Rosé, a Veil, and a Dog in a Flower Crown

The afternoon opened with Monica and her bridesmaids in navy robes toasting with rosé, then the gown: a fitted lace trumpet with a cathedral veil that would become the day's recurring character. Her veil portrait, smiling beneath the tulle with a diamond necklace catching window light, set the tone.

Colin's side wore navy with green ties and pink boutonnieres, and the processional's best-dressed members were the flower girls in their crowns, flanked by the family dog carrying his own flower basket duty. Weddings at a ranch should feel like family, and this one did from the first frame.

An Evening Ceremony Under the Sycamores

The ceremony began at six-forty, when July light turns to gold and pours sideways through the sycamores. Monica walked the petal-lined aisle on her father's arm with the sun starring through the branches, and the whole ceremony glowed, lanterns at the aisle, greenery overhead, and the Birchwood Room's garden wrapped around everyone.

The first kiss landed in that same golden light. Evening ceremonies at Calamigos are the venue's best-kept secret: same aisle, entirely different photograph.

The Lake, the Dock, and the Lights

After family photos we walked to the ranch's lake for the portrait every Calamigos couple should make: the two of them on the wooden dock, the water holding a perfect reflection, the willows going dark behind them. The hero image of this story came moments earlier on the lawn, Monica's cathedral veil lifted and swept across the grass in one long wave beneath the oaks.

Then night fell and Calamigos became Calamigos: strings of lights dripping from the trees like rain. We stole the couple for one last frame, a kiss under the chandeliers and twinkle lights, and sent them back to the party.
