A Calamigos Ranch Wedding: Stephanie and Grant at the Waterfall

A real spring wedding at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu: a ceremony in front of the waterfall, portraits under the oaks, a vintage pickup dressed in garland, and a first dance dip worth framing.

Calamigos Ranch is the venue our Los Angeles couples ask about most, and the waterfall is the reason. Tucked into the Malibu hills under a canopy of oaks, the ranch's ceremony sites are built around falling water and filtered light, and Stephanie and Grant used the best of it for their spring wedding.

They inquired the previous August for an April date, which is the sweet spot for booking here. Spring at Calamigos means green everywhere, roses climbing the garden walls, and comfortable light for an outdoor ceremony without the summer haze.

Soft Details in the Garden Light

Stephanie's gown did something we love: it saved its drama for the exit. Simple and airy from the front, with a fully beaded back panel that swung like jewelry when she moved. We photograph gowns like this from behind on purpose, and her getting-ready coverage leaned into it, from the mirror reveal with her mom to the crystal detail work.

The styling throughout stayed garden-soft: wildflower bud vases, mirrored signs tucked into greenery, blush and lavender florals, and a blanket ladder for guests that read to have and to hold in case you get cold. Detail styling this cohesive makes a photographer's morning, and it photographs like the wedding already knows what it wants to be.

A First Look Under the Oaks

Their first look happened in the rose garden, surrounded by lanterns and climbing blooms, and then we wandered the property the way Calamigos rewards: under the oak canopy, across the wooden bridges, and over to a vintage green pickup dressed in white floral garland for the day.

This is what separates Calamigos from a single-backdrop venue. Every fifty feet is a different world, and an unhurried portrait hour here fills an album on its own. We walk couples through exactly how to schedule it in our Calamigos Ranch ceremony site guide.

Vows in Front of the Waterfall

The ceremony site is the postcard: a floral arch in pink, lavender, and cream, white chairs on the deck, and the waterfall pouring down the rock face behind the aisle. Stephanie and Grant exchanged vows to the sound of falling water, and the recessional walked them straight into the oaks.

For photography, the waterfall site asks one thing of your timeline: an afternoon start, so the canopy diffuses the sun instead of fighting it. Get that right and every ceremony frame looks like it was lit on purpose, because it was.

A Barn Reception and a Dip Worth Framing

The reception moved into the ranch's warm wood interior, and the first dance gave us the frame every couple secretly wants: a full dip, string lights through the doorway, and both of them laughing through it. We end a lot of Calamigos galleries on that kind of image because the venue's evenings feel exactly like that, warm, woody, and a little cinematic.

Years of photographing this property have gone into our first-hand Calamigos Ranch venue guide, from ceremony site comparisons to where the light lands at every hour. If you are choosing between its ceremony sites, start with the deep-dive guide.
