A Newhall Mansion Wedding: Cathryn and Tommy at the Victorian Castle

A real wedding at Newhall Mansion in Piru: a stained-glass silhouette, a gilded Victorian parlor, a ring bearer in a dog costume, and grandparents who stole the dance floor.

Newhall Mansion rises out of the orchards in Piru like a Victorian castle, stone turret, wraparound porch, and interiors that have not lost an ounce of their 1890s drama. It is one of the Santa Clarita Valley's best-kept wedding secrets, twenty minutes from our studio, and Cathryn and Tommy's March wedding showed off every side of it.

They came to us through a friend ten months out, and the plan was classic estate wedding: getting ready in the mansion, a garden ceremony under an arch, and portraits everywhere the house allows, which at Newhall means everywhere.

Stained Glass and Gilded Rooms

The mansion's interiors did half our work for us. Cathryn's silhouette in the stained-glass landing window is one of our favorite bridal frames from that season, and after the first look we sat the two of them in the gilded parlor beneath the carved archways, lace train across the mosaic tile, for portraits that look a century old in the best way.

Estate houses like this ask a photographer to work in low, moody light and to respect the rooms. That is our home turf. The gallery should feel like the house.

A Garden Ceremony and a Very Good Boy

The ceremony ran in the tropical garden under a circular arch of blush roses wrapped in burgundy drape, Tommy in black with a burgundy tie to match. And in the front row sat the day's undisputed scene-stealer: a ring bearer in a full dog costume, ears and all, sitting patiently beside his vested brother.

We photograph a lot of weddings where the couple sweats the small stuff. This one knew exactly which details mattered, a beautiful arch, a costume that made everyone laugh, and time built in to enjoy both.

Golden Hour in the Orchards

Piru's citrus country gave us the golden-hour set, Cathryn and Tommy in the warm light between the trees, and then the turret frames that define this venue: the hero image on the tiled staircase under a sky full of weather, and the wide portrait with the whole castle behind them.

The night belonged to the generations. Cathryn's grandparents took the dance floor and we photographed them in black and white, her grandmother kissing her grandfather's hand under the brim of his hat. Frames like that one are why we stay until the very end.
