A Fairmont Grand Del Mar Wedding: Rhonda and Christopher's Grand San Diego Day

A real Assyrian wedding at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar in San Diego: a couture beaded cape, a crown and cathedral train, a ballroom drowning in burgundy florals, and the resort's Moorish arches at dusk.

The Fairmont Grand Del Mar is one of the most opulent wedding venues in Southern California, a Mediterranean palace in the hills above San Diego with Moorish arches, grand staircases, and interiors built for spectacle. Rhonda and Christopher matched it beat for beat with an Assyrian wedding of extraordinary scale, and we drove down to photograph every inch of it.

A wedding at this level is a photography marathon: a couture gown that demands its own coverage, a ceremony rich with tradition, and a ballroom transformed into something closer to an opera set. Our first-hand Fairmont Grand Del Mar venue guide covers how we work the property from arches to ballroom.

Couture, a Crown, and Deep Burgundy

Rhonda's gown was a statement in itself: a fully beaded couture bodice with a matching cape, worn with a crown and a cathedral veil, and a bouquet of burgundy blooms and white orchids that set the wedding's whole palette. Christopher wore a tuxedo with a burgundy boutonniere and a gold C and R monogram at the pocket.

When a gown is this architectural, we photograph it like couture, in profile, in motion, and spread full across marble and stone, because the dress is one of the day's main characters.

A First Look in the Gardens

Before the ceremony we staged a first look in the resort's manicured gardens, Christopher waiting under the arcade, Rhonda approaching in her crown and cape with the burgundy cascade bouquet. The Grand Del Mar's grounds photograph like a European estate, columns, hedges, and warm stone at every turn.

The couple even brought their dog into the getting-ready coverage, a small, human detail inside a day of enormous grandeur, and exactly the kind of moment we make sure not to miss.

A Ceremony Under an Arch of Flowers

The ceremony was pure theater: a towering arch of burgundy and white flowers framing a cross, a priest in vestments, and a mirror-polished floor that doubled the whole scene. Rhonda's train pooled across it as they took their vows.

Assyrian and Middle Eastern Christian ceremonies carry deep tradition and real visual drama, and we photograph them with the reverence they deserve, wide enough to hold the scale, close enough to hold the emotion.

A Ballroom Drowning in Flowers

The reception is the image people remember: hanging gardens of pink, purple, and burgundy florals over mirrored tables, red drapes, crystal candelabras, and uplighting that turned the whole room jewel-toned. We stole Rhonda and Christopher for a portrait in the finished ballroom before the doors opened, her enormous train fanned into a perfect circle.

This is the top tier of wedding design, and photographing it well is its own craft. You expose for the florals, protect the faces, and let the room be as maximal as the couple built it to be.
