When to Book Maternity Photos: A Week-by-Week Guide

The ideal session window, why booking happens earlier than you think, and how to plan a maternity portrait you will love for decades, from a studio that photographs mothers every week.

The most common maternity-session regret is not the gown, the backdrop, or the photographer. It is timing, waiting until the window has nearly closed, then scrambling. The second most common is the opposite fear: booking so early there is "nothing to photograph yet."

Here is the timing we recommend after photographing hundreds of mothers in our studios, week by week.

The Sweet Spot: 28-34 Weeks

Between the start of the third trimester and about week 34, the bump is unmistakably beautiful, energy is usually still good, and standing for a directed session is comfortable with breaks. Most of the portraits you have admired were made in exactly this window.

Within it, weeks 30-32 are the bullseye: full, sculptural shape; enough mobility for flowing-fabric poses; low risk of the session feeling like an endurance event.

Week by Week

Twins or a high-risk pregnancy move everything earlier, typically 24-28 weeks. Mention it at booking and we plan the session around your energy, not a template.

  • Under 26 weeks, usually too early for the classic silhouette, unless you simply love how you feel now (a valid reason)
  • 27-29 weeks, beautiful, slightly softer shape; ideal if you tend to carry small or want maximum comfort
  • 30-32 weeks, the bullseye; book here when in doubt
  • 33-35 weeks, gorgeous fullness; plan extra seated poses and pacing breaks
  • 36+ weeks, possible and sometimes stunning, but you are negotiating with comfort and an unpredictable calendar

Book Earlier Than the Session

Here is the part that surprises people: to be photographed at 30 weeks, you want to book around weeks 18-22. Studio calendars fill four to eight weeks out, and the planning that makes these portraits extraordinary, gown selection, palette, backdrop design, deserves an unhurried consultation, not a same-week scramble.

Booking early also means choice. The studio's couture gown wardrobe is included with every session, fitted silhouettes, dramatic tulle, flowing trains, and planning ahead means the exact look you envision is steamed and waiting, in your size, on your date. There is nothing to buy.

Partners, Children, and the Frame

Maternity sessions are about becoming, which is why partners and big brothers and sisters are always welcome in part of the session. The portrait of a toddler's hands on the bump tends to out-earn every solo frame at the reveal.

If you are deciding between maternity and newborn coverage: maternity first. The bump has a deadline; the baby will happily be photographed for months. Many families pair the two, ask us how that works when you inquire.

The Short Version

Book around week 20. Shoot around week 30. Let the studio handle gowns, styling, and direction. And if you are reading this in your third trimester right now, don't panic, message us today; calendars shift and we hold space for exactly this.

Every portrait journey begins with a styled studio session, maternity very much included.

Reading is planning. The next step is a conversation.
